Dr. David DeHoogh-Kliewer is Director of Choral Activities and Associate Professor of Music at the University of Sioux Falls where he teaches courses in conducting, music theory, music education, and conducts the Concert Chorale, the Singing Camerata chamber singers, and the University Singers contemporary a cappella ensemble. He received a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting at the University of Kansas where he studied conducting with Dr. Paul Tucker, a Master’s degree in Vocal Music Education from the University of South Dakota and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and Education from Bethel College (Kansas). Under David’s direction, the University of Sioux Falls Concert Chorale has enjoyed performing throughout the United States and Europe, including recent performances in Notre Dame in Paris, Venice’s St. Mark’s Cathedral, various venues in Belgium and the Netherlands, and a special performance for the Pope in Vatican City. Under his direction, the Singing Camerata chamber singers have toured in Budapest, Vienna, and Prague and continue the strong tradition of celebrating the annual Madrigal Dinners every December as they have since 1964.
An important element of Dr. DeHoogh-Kliewer’s choral tour itineraries is service. In alignment with the University’s motto, Culture for Service, members of the Concert Chorale and Singing Camerata have served at the Open Door Mission in Omaha, Habitat for Humanity and Food Bank of the Rockies in Denver, performed for children at the Colorado Children’s Hospital, and have served various orphanages, homeless shelters, and children’s hospitals regionally and in Europe.
Prior to joining the faculty at USF, Dr. DeHoogh-Kliewer taught elementary general music, middle school vocal music, and conducted high school choirs for eleven years, leading tours to Washington, D.C., New York City, Denver, and San Francisco. David’s choirs have received state, regional, and national invitations and have performed at various music conventions. Prior to teaching in South Dakota, he was a music educator in Colorado teaching all levels, kindergarten through senior high. David has served as a guest clinician and adjudicator for various musical events and contests and enjoys conducting choral festivals for all ages. He is a member of the American Choral Directors Association, serving as the South Dakota chairperson for College and University Choirs. At USF, he facilitates the collegiate chapter of NAfME (the National Association for Music Education) and performs locally as a baritone soloist. David is married to Michelle, a professional counselor at USF, and they have two daughters, Hannah and Emma. In addition to making music, he enjoys family time, reading, sports, and travel.
